Kawaii at the Movies: 5 good reasons to watch Moana

A revolutionary “princess”

In the last few years, Disney has accustomed us to female leads behind the times. Not anymore damsel in distress, but independent, rebel girls more interested in fulfilling their dreams than in finding a prince to marry. Moana is right in this category: she is the daughter of the village chief and she’s also very good as a leader, but she knows that her destiny is elsewhere. But her journey doesn’t bring her to renounce or deny her heritage: as the lyrics of one of the songs say “when it’s time to find home we know the way” and Moana, after having completed her mission, is ready to meet her responsibilities and change forever her island.

The amazing soundtrack

For Moana’s songs, Disney called one of the most successful authors of recent times. In fact, part of the soundtrack was written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, award-winning writer and performer of the celebrated musical “Hamilton”, who has worked with the Samoan songwriter Opetaia Foa’i and composter Mark Mancina, who wrote the music for Tarzan. Make yourself a favour and listen one more time the original soundtrack (you can find it on Spotify), especially if you’re watching the movie in a language other than English.
