J*Fashion: Fairy Kei

So far, Kawaii Gazette dealt almost exclusively with original characters (Hello Kitty, Rilakkuma and friends). Today, we start a new section that goes slightly beyond the characters, but remains in the field of “kawaii” (or rather, of “kawaii” as an adjective). The items that end up in the Cute Lifestyle category, in fact, concerns fashion, trends, Japanese pop culture and everything that, from our point of view, is cute and deserves attention. We hope you like this new section! If you have any suggestions or ideas, you can always contact us by email or leave us a message on Facebook or Twitter 😀

Harajuku is always like a cauldron producing new fashions. One of the latest trends, which is having increasing success, is Fairy Kei. This style was created as a tribute to the eighties and all those characters who played along with our childhood, from Care Bears to Rainbow Brite, from Popples to Barbie. As Decora, clothes and accessories are colorful, but the two styles differ greatly in terms of the colors used! Fairy Kei, in fact, prefers pastel colors (purple, pink, yellow, light green, white), put together to create a sort of candy rainbow, or alternating black and fuchsia. The clothes prints are reminiscent of our childhood or disco music (polka dots, confetti, rainbow), paying homage to typical eighties objects (do you remember records and cassette tapes?), or depicting animals and treats designed with a retro style. Not surprisingly, those who wear Fairy Kei loves to shop in vintage stores (there are also specialized stores, such as Spank!) or to retrieve childhood toys and accessories!

What you can find in Fairy Kei wardrobes? Surely accessories, strictly made in colored plastic, as beaded necklaces, pins, ribbons and pom-poms. The tutu is a must, especially if pastel colored, to be worn “on sight” or overlapping each other. Also, leg warmers socks are perfect to wear (overlapped with colored tights), coupled with tennis shoes.
