Events: Japan, Empire of the Characters

The Japanese Cultural Institute, which represents in Italy the Japan Foundation (the Japanese organization encouraging cultural exchanges with other countries in the world), promotes a very interesting exhibition dedicated to characters from anime, manga, video games and not only, part of Japanese people everyday life, and increasingly popular and well known in the West. Through models, films and photographs, the exhibition “Japan, Empire of the Characters” will present the most famous and beloved characters, and will investigate the reasons for such popularity in Japanese society.

Giappone, Impero dei Characters

The exhibition is divided into four sections:

  1. The honeymoon between Japanese people and characters. A brief history from the Fifties to present day, to get to know those characters that still accompany the daily lives of Japanese, from Pokemon to Astroboy, from Gundam to Tamagotchi.
  2. The daily lives of characters. How is the room of a typical high school Japanese girl? Through the reproduction of the room of a typical girl (with Hello Kitty furniture and accessories) it’s highlighted the close relationship between Japanese and characters.
  3. The future of the characters. How has changed the world of Japanese characters with the advent of the web and the new graphics technology.
  4. Characters embedded in Japanese society. Thanks to several photographs depicting ordinary people, it will be shown the close integration of the Japanese characters in the social fabric, regardless of age and sex.

The exhibition will be in Rome from September 2th7 to end October 29th 2010, at the Japanese Cultural Institute in Via Antonio Gramsci, 74. The opening hours are from 9:00 to 12:30 and from 13:30 to 18:30, from Monday to Friday.
