Kawaii at the Movies: In this corner of the world

In September, it’s not just back to school or work, but also Italian anime season at the movies begins again! The first animated feature coming to cinemas on September 19th and 20th is In this corner of the world, the emotional movie by Sunao Katabuchi, in our theatres thanks to Nexo Digital and Dynit. Here’s why you should watch it!

In this corner of the world

In this corner of the world is the story of Suzu, a Japanese girl with a great passion for drawing and an even bigger imagination. Just 18, she marries Shusaku and leaves her hometown, Hiroshima, to move in Kure to her new family. Her simple life, however, is turned upside down by the Second World War. Suzu faces each obstacle and change with bravery, ingenuity and a bit of naivety, until the horror of the war knocks at the doors of her corner of the world.

In this corner of the world

The movie by Sunao Katabuchi, from Fumiyo Kono manga, tells us the war from the point of view of common people, the ones not fighting, but staying at home trying to survive survive food shortages and continuous anti-aircraft alarms. As we know very well, nevertheless, people like Suzu and her family are also the one to pay the highest price of the war. And it happens suddenly, with a blinding light, the earth that trembles and a weird cloud on the horizon.

In this corner of the world

Why we liked it? In this corner of the world is a delicate and emotional movie, an insight into the life of a girl like many other, forced to live one of the most horrible pages in history. The lovely animations that look like one of Suzu illustrations make almost forget the tragedy that is about to hit the characters: only the dates on screen remind us the approaching of the fateful August 6th, 1945. However, In this corner of the world is not a sad movie. It’s dramatic, moving and with some scenes that hit you like a punch in the stomach, but it is also pervaded by so much courage, optimism and desire to start over. Prepare your tissues (and don’t miss the ending credits)!
