We girls of the ’80s grew up watching Majokko on TV, cartoons dedicated to the magical girls. Our favorite is still the charming Creamy Mami, the magical idol born from the pencil of Akemi Takada, author we had the honor to meet in person some editions of Lucca Comics ago. As you well know, in Japan (and elsewhere) everything Eighties is trendy, especially if pastel coloured and “fairy” as our dear Creamy. No wonder, then, if some of the most famous gothic lolita brands have decided to dedicate a small collection to our own favorite childhood heroine!

Metamorphose, Putumayo, Angelic Pretty and Shampooooo have created a line of clothing and accessories that recalls the unmistakeable style of the anime series, from adorable clothing that would be perfect in Creamy Mami wardrobe to accessories that show off the magical objects entrusted by the goblin Pino Pino to Yu (the magic wands and the medallion). Only Posi and Nega are missing!

Pampulu-pimpulu-parimpampum! What is your favorite magical girl?

Have you ever wondered how was the kawaii phenomenon born? Today we usually associate this word with Hello Kitty & co. or colored Harajuku fashion, but in fact the origins of the style date back to a century ago!

In 1914, the painter and poet Yumeji Takehisa opened a store in Nihombashi, a district of Tokyo, selling stationery items in Art Nouveau style and inspired by Western art. It’s here that kawaii style was born! In the following decades, popular illustrators and mangaka began to spread the style in the country, until the advent of our beloved Sanrio in the Seventies.

Illustrazioni di Kiichi Tsutaya e Ado Mizumori. Immagini da Japan Times.

To celebrate the centenary of kawaii style, in Tokyo has opened an unmissable exhibition that traces its history, exposing antique accessories from various historical periods since Taisho era (1912-1926) and the memories of those who experienced kawaii culture through the years. “Taisho Hajimatta kara Nihon no Kawaii Ten” (“Japanese kawaii items from the beginning of Taisho era”) is the name of the exhibition that will remain open until July 1st at Yayoi Museum in Tokyo. If you’re there (lucky you!), you can’t miss it! For the ones far awat from Japan, there are some photos and clips from the exhibition.

The name Pigna is familiar to everyone here in Italy: practically everyone have written between the lines (or squares) of a notebook made by the italian paper company. One of the historical and most famous line is Pigna Nature, a series of notebook and binders made from recycled paper and featuring beautiful retro covers with flowers, leaves and animals.

As you already know, last December we attended NiMI festival in Florence, hosting many stalls from Japan. Between a gadget and another, our attention was drawn to a real invasion of chicks, Piyodamari (whose name literally means “pond of chicks”).

Piyodamari stall at NiMI Festival

Piyodamari was created in the late 90s by Hikaru Suemasa, famous as the designer of San-x Tarepanda. The real debut for small Piyos happened in 1998 at the Design Festa, one of the largest international art events, held twice a year in Tokyo. In 2001, the group welcomed the chicken Niwa, eternal “victim” of the invading chicks.

Thanks also to a series of fun movies (in which the Piyos’ chirping is as annoying as hypnotic), Piyodamari reaches a good popularity, especially in Korea, where they have become protagonists of two video games, Piyodamari DS and Piyodamari: Eat Up!, the latter available for iPhone, with poor Niwa struggling with weight gain of Piyos, apparently with a very sweet tooth.

Obviously, there are a lot of accessories and gadgets, with the fantastic Piyos as protagonists, especially in an adorable mini version, very small and made of towelling. We could not miss the chance to bring one of them at home with us!

Raise your hand if you don’t know macarons! In recent years, the colorful French pastries (a sort of almonds meringue filled with cream or fruit) have become popular worldwide. We are crazy for them as well, and everytime is possible we dash in a branch of Ladurée, the most famous French patisserie specialized in these delicious cookies (you can buy them in Italy in Milan, but we were able to eat them even in London).

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the maison, Ladurée called none other than Hello Kitty, for one of the sweetest collaborations ever. So, the collection Hello Kitty x Ladurée is born, where the classic and delicious macaroons and chocolates limited edition boxes join a series of cute accessories and stationery.

The collection will be on sale from this week in Ladurée pastry shops worldwide! Finally, a curiosity: did you know that March 20 is World macarons day? If you have never tasted macarons and you’re somewhere near a Ladurée shop, this is a good opportunity to do so (I recommend the ones with chocolate, caramel and raspberries: they are delicious )!

During the last months, our dear My Melody was the protagonist of a contest that involved not only her fans, but also celebrities and fashion houses in Japan. First things first…

Last September, the My Dream My Melody competition started, a contest for stylists and designers, invited to realize a new outfit for My Melo.

On February 6th, a fantastic exhibition dedicated to Sanrio characters opened in Tokyo! Customers of Tom’s Sandwich, a bar in Daikanyama (Shibuya), infact, have the pleasure to admire and buy a series of beautiful pieces made by Sanrio artists.

Some of the pieces of Sanrio Character Illustration Exhibition. Images (c)Sanrio.co

Besides the obvious presence of illustrations dedicated to Hello Kitty, My Melody, Little Twin Stars, Cinnamoroll and company, there are some new, original characters that probably we will never see in stores (and for some of them is a real shame).

Some of the new characters at Sanrio Characters Illustration Exhibition.
Sanrio Character Illustration Exhibition will remain open until March 4th at Tom’s Sandwich of Daikanyama. If you’re over there, go have a look!
