In 1914, the painter and poet Yumeji Takehisa opened a store in Nihombashi, a district of Tokyo, selling stationery items in Art Nouveau style and inspired by Western art. It’s here that kawaii style was born! In the following decades, popular illustrators and mangaka began to spread the style in the country, until the advent of our beloved Sanrio in the Seventies.

To celebrate the centenary of kawaii style, in Tokyo has opened an unmissable exhibition that traces its history, exposing antique accessories from various historical periods since Taisho era (1912-1926) and the memories of those who experienced kawaii culture through the years. “Taisho Hajimatta kara Nihon no Kawaii Ten” (“Japanese kawaii items from the beginning of Taisho era”) is the name of the exhibition that will remain open until July 1st at Yayoi Museum in Tokyo. A good initiative that will make happy both Charmmy fans and the girls who pay attention to environmental sustainability issues.

Piyodamari was created in the late 90s by Hikaru Suemasa, famous as the designer of San-x Tarepanda. The real debut for small Piyos happened in 1998 at the Design Festa, one of the largest international art events, held twice a year in Tokyo. In 2001, the group welcomed the chicken Niwa, eternal “victim” of the invading chicks.

Thanks also to a series of fun movies (in which the Piyos’ chirping is as annoying as hypnotic), Piyodamari reaches a good popularity, especially in Korea, where they have become protagonists of two video games, Piyodamari DS and Piyodamari: Eat Up!, the latter available for iPhone, with poor Niwa struggling with weight gain of Piyos, apparently with a very sweet tooth.

Obviously, there are a lot of accessories and gadgets, with the fantastic Piyos as protagonists, especially in an adorable mini version, very small and made ​​of towelling. We could not miss the chance to bring one of them at home with us!

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the maison, Ladurée called none other than Hello Kitty, for one of the sweetest collaborations ever. So, the collection Hello Kitty x Ladurée is born, where the classic and delicious macaroons and chocolates limited edition boxes join a series of cute accessories and stationery.

The collection will be on sale from this week in Ladurée pastry shops worldwide! Finally, a curiosity: did you know that March 20 is World macarons day? If you have never tasted macarons and you’re somewhere near a Ladurée shop, this is a good opportunity to do so (I recommend the ones with chocolate, caramel and raspberries: they are delicious )!

The  Hello Kitty and Minnie Deco Seals are a series of bags (5 for each character) that contain, in addition to the traditional candy, a sheet of stickers for deco-den, all studded with rhinestones, perfect to attach to the phone!

Even more interesting it’s the collection of Hello Kitty and Disney Nail Seals, a set of 10 bags with lovely stickers for nail art dedicated to the Sanrio cat (including those of the Colorful Bunny line we love so much) and the Disney world characters.

Last September, the My Dream My Melody competition started, a contest for stylists and designers, invited to realize a new outfit for My Melo. The contestants had to “dress up” their model (a special plush) and send a photograph of their work. The best works (some of which are shown in this video) were selected to participate in My My Melody, an exhibition that opened on February 22nd and that will also exhibit several versions of My Melody made ​​by many Japanese celebrities and fashion houses, including Anna Tsuchiya, Misako Aoki, Baby, The Stars Shine Bright and Yuko “Hello Kitty” Yamaguchi (you can see them all on the official site).
